Gozo is a small island just North of Malta, itself a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea. Despite it’s small size, Gozo is a beautiful rock filled with spectacular hidden beaches, historical sights and a welcoming people.
What is Gozo known for?
During the Summer, Gozo has a whole host of activities to do. Both those who enjoy rocky, and sandy beaches will be in for a treat. The island has many hidden spots which require some work to get to, but are always definitely worth it! Once you spend a Summer or two mapping them out, you can also visit some of the island’s historical sights, such as the Cittadella, the island’s major and largest fortification. From the atop the walls of the Cittadella you can see all around the island, from Marsalforn to Mgarr. The island has a good number of beautiful churches as well, including the Basilica of Ta’ Pinu and the Xewkija Rotunda.
Gozo is also very popular for its Nadur Carnival festival, where several colourful caravans and just as colourful costumes, make their way through the streets of Nadur as crowds celebrate Carnival. While it has taken a hit during COVID, the festival has made a return in 2022, and is likely to get back to its original popularity in subsequent years.
Weather & Transport:
Winters tend to be rough in Gozo, as when the weather gets harsher there is much less to do. You can easily fix this by visiting Malta. A trip to Malta is as easy as grabbing the ferry that operates every 45 minutes, taking 25 minutes for every trip. The ferry cost is cheap when by foot, at 4.45 euros per round trip.
Once in Malta, you are free to check out the sister island’s many clubs and bars. With that said, Gozo has many fantastic restaurants, which tend to specialise in typical Maltese and Italian dishes.
Public Transport is effective in Gozo, but oftentimes, the distances are small enough to walk to, especially if you live close to the centre. In the sweltering hit of late Summer, the buses have air-conditioning to keep you cool and refreshed as you make it to the beach.
